Welcome to my little portfolio of illustrations! My main tools for digital work are either a Wacom Cintiq or my old reliable Thinkpad X220T for portable work. On the software side I primarly use PaintToolSAI for the majority of the process and Photoshop CS5 for touch ups and special effects. I also enjoy working with more traditional tools, mostly pencil and copic markers!
I focus mostly on drawing fantasy type characters and I love both a bit of cute and a bit of monstrous! I really love putting time into backgrounds and getting lost in the tiny details that fill up the spaces that might not otherwise seem important at a first glance. I also really like playing with colours lately and I spend a lot of time experimenting with the HSV (Hue, Saturation, Value) slider. I hope you enjoy!
My latest drawing as of now! I've been loving drawing mermaids for the past few years and wanted to go for something a bit darker and scarier and what better way than to tie in some deep sea creatures into her design!
I really loved doing the background and the colours here, but I got a little bit lost in the (sea)weeds on this one and never really found a satisfying end to the process of drawing it.
I think i just need to leave it here and consider it complete!
This is definently my favorite piece of art I've ever made! I have a lot to say about making this and the process, I've got a whole page just for it! (Coming soon!)
Super proud of this one! It's actually a redraw of a piece right near the bottom of this gallery, from 2013. I had a lot of fun with the colours and particularly all the background elements, I get lost in the small details and that's really where I find the most flow when drawing. Looking at it now I feel like I did a great job on the lighting on the luma too!
For a university assignment where I had to work with a mix of photography and illustration. I took all the photos myself and merged them all into a scene that I feel quite proud of! The car on the right is actually mine!
Another university assignment where I had to design a character! I'm not sure if it's very obvious since it's from a completely different angle but this is actually the bedroom I also created in the 'bedroom cutaway' piece further below, which belonged to this character. She never got a name though! What would she and her little axolotl be called?
Had a lot of fun with this one since I started with a black background and painted in the lights with a very light and transparent brush to build up texture! You can view a time lapse of it here!
Very much a comfort drawing in the middle of a very busy study period! Not even sure how I squeezed this one in... You can view a timelapse of it here!
One of my favorite characters to play in Dragon Ball FighterZ and easily the best DB character design in years! I used the animation from one of her super attacks as reference because I loved the extreme perspective and found the way this game used perspective as a whole really inspiring.
The drawing that got me mesmerised by mermaid mania and started me down a path of drawing many more to come! This was actually a university assignment for a mural in a children’s hospital, with the pitch to use local Western Australian flora and fauna! I did a lot of visual research on a range of things and practiced sketching mermaids for hours before I felt like I understood the anatomy, at which point I was hooked!
Something I’m particularly proud of with this piece is that I actually submitted it quite unfinished and later on came back to it in my own time to polish it up to a standard I was much happier with. I don’t feel like it’s something I’d want to do very often and I enjoy feeling like I can just walk away from an art piece and accept it for what it is but I really felt like I loved what I’d made here and wanted to add some things I couldn’t at the time due to the deadline.
Had so much fun with the background here! I wanted to portray Bowser dashing through the air in some way, I used a screenshot from Super Smash Bros as a reference. It looks like he’s about to fall in the lava, kind of like Mario on the original SMB box art!
My lalafell warrior in Final Fantasy XIV online, her name is Rosa Lysithea!! Just went into this with the only goal being to enjoy the process of painting!
A chest mimic for university, from a prompt to study shape language, it’s quite fun to play around with the variety of curves and sharp edges and create a silhouette which is completely subverted by the inner desigh, just like a mimic!
Some dinosaur sketches for a simple animation test, I actually did this for my library studies course, where we had to make a simple promotional TV slide for a series or genre of books (In this case, non fiction books for children). I didn’t need to at all but I had an itch to create an animation as I hadn’t had any chances to in years and it felt like a good excuse to! You can see these dinos in action here!
From a period where I really struggled to create or express myself, I drew Zelda’s Twilight Princess/Super Smash Bros. Brawl design in her dark alt palette. Playing Zelda in Project M was one of the ways I did manage to express myself around this time in life, I really had so much fun playing her and viewing the game through a fresh perspective.
Just messing around with a CRT test pattern in the reflection of my eye, taking the photo took a long time but I like how it all came out and I learnt a lot observing the light and shadow.
Based on Bowser's character select portrait in Legacy TE/Project+. I like drawing things this loose, kind of inspired by Quentin Blake illustrations somewhat. I did most of the colouring with clipping masks and I loved the freedom of being able to keep such simple sketchy linework in a single black pen.
The bedroom seen in the axolotl girl design earlier in the gallery! I drew almost every item in this room on grid paper first from the front, side and top to really learn the proportions.
Photorealistic painting isn't really my strong point but I did my best! Had to do this for uni and although it isn't my favorite thing I've ever drawn I feel proud enough that I gave it a go and learnt from the experience. One of my favorite parts of studying art was it's ability to take me out of my comfort zone and make me draw things for the learning experience to improve myself and develop skills. Whether you go to school or not, I strongly encourage trying new things in your art practice.
Fairly simple tiling pattern attempt for a design assignment. The trans pride flag colours match with a butterfly's journey in life in such a perfect way!
I always preferred Vegeta's initial design with the full armour in the Saiyan saga, I felt like with each saga the design got gutted out of neccesity since it took too long to draw :/ Wanted to pay tribute to it here and reminisce on how cool I found his early appearance and characterisation.
some items for a potential rpg game, i imagined a game where you play as a bunch of rowdy mermaids who capture and mind control pirates with their music, would be like a monster collecting game lol
I've always had a soft spot for Silver, his abilities are cool and I always felt like he had potential, finally years later I've discovered him in Project 06, check it out if you haven't, he's super fun to play now! Back around the time I drew this he was my favorite Sonic character alongside Knuckles.
Super Paper Mario had both some of my least favorite character designs and then some of my favorites at the same time, with Count Bleck being one of them! I doubt many Mario RPG characters would ever come back outside of their debut game but I think he'd be an awesome cameo role in a future game.
Back about a year after I started HRT, my hair was only about this long and it would puff up so much! It looked really cute with a bow in it at that length!
My all time favorite character! The calm aura she (and Super Mario Galaxy) had was exactly what I needed when I first discovered the game in high school.
I know this guy got some flack due to how good weather teams were in Gen 5, but the design is just too perfect, the mischeviousness of cartoon moles and their goofy little smiles will always have a place in my heart.
